Our love affair with the Ionian began in 2012, when we first sailed around its sparkling islands and discovered the magic of Lefkada. We were instantly captivated by the warm, welcoming people, the incredible beaches, the food, and the breathtaking scenery. Lefkada is a rare Greek island that truly has something for everyone. It’s home to some of Europe’s most breathtaking beaches, including Porto Katsiki and Egremni, where dramatic cliffs meet bright turquoise waters, alongside quaint seaside ports such as Syvota and Nidri. The island is perfect for water lovers, offering everything from sailing and boat hire to paddleboarding, snorkelling and world-class wind and kitesurfing at Vassaliki. Beyond the coastline, Lefkada remains wonderfully unspoilt, with lush forests, mountain trails, waterfalls and traditional villages like Karya, Fterno and Vafkeri that give a real sense of authentic Greek life. Food is a huge part of the island’s charm, with family-run tavernas, fresh seafood and local produce such as honey, olive oil and island-grown lentils. Its location also makes it ideal for exploring the surrounding Ionian islands, with easy day trips to Meganisi, Kalamos, Kastos and the famous Skorpios. Despite its beauty, Lefkada has kept a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere, offering stunning sunsets and a slower pace of life. And with its bridge to the mainland, it’s also one of the easiest Greek islands to reach - no ferries required.

We felt like we were in the heart of it all, a short walk into Fterno to the local tavernas really takes you back in time and to an authentic Greek experience. A short taxi to the lively Syvota enabled us to have fun evenings with music and dancing, and enjoy the seafront experience.
Modern bathrooms and the clean and sophisticated living and kitchen space at The Retreat really added to the trip, providing a home-from-home delight. Having never visited the area before and wanting to take it all in, short taxi rides offered a trip out to other areas such as Nydri, a town for shopping, food, and a nice beach club. Boat trips to Fiskardo being possible as well, enabled us to achieve the perfect balance, taking days at the villa and the next out to the other wonderful islands. The Retreat offers the complete encapsulation of luxury, tranquility, and it's the true definition of heaven. Staying for two weeks was truly a pleasure and a gift. We cannot wait to return.
